Why does google post this with other metrics of colleges? At first I was alarmed to see ours at 3.7/5 but after looking up a few other schools realized that it's just some lame survey. Swarthmore ranked below us! Does Niche pay google for the exposure? Anyway, I simply wanted to caution prospective applicants who see that number about its complete irrelevance.

Hamilton Prize

People should be aware that the deadline for the Hamilton Prize is fast approaching, so if you've, for instance, already put in your ED application, you may want to start brushing up that one-act play, epic poem or novella you have hidden away; it could mean a four year full scholarship: http://newsletter.blogs.wesleyan.edu/2016/12/05/hamilton-prize-committee/?gaclick=featured

How tough is it to get into the film department?

I'm an admitted transfer student who is looking to double major in film & English. I know Wesleyan's film program is amazing, but the way the film major was presented during my info session makes it sound fairly difficult to get into? Like is this something I should not count on being admitted to? I'm just worried because being able to major in film is one of the reasons I'm transferring, and I don't want to transfer to Wesleyan only to not have a shot at getting into the major. For context, I was a freshman this year at Colgate University, where I maintained at least A-'s in all my classes. I took an intro to film class and got an A+.

Strength of Wesleyan physics and astronomy programs?

Hello, I'll be attending Wesleyan in the fall and currently see two paths forward: either the College of Social Sciences (I love philosophy and politics and am fairly interested in economics so it's perfect) or physics/astronomy. In the latter case I may go for a double major (I'm assuming you can't double major with CSS, correct me if I'm wrong). Now, I've read from past threads that Wes gets an unusually high amount of federal science funding - the highest of any LAC, though I don't know if this information is up to date. However, from what I have read of it, most of this money seems to go to biology research. Is there a disparity between the quality of the biology and physics programs at Wesleyan? Do physics majors get the same kinds of opportunities?

The economics component of CSS

Hello again, I'd like to know about the economics aspect of the College of Social Studies, particularly in regards to its rigor, mathematics requirements, and how large a proportion of the CSS program it takes up. One of my plans is to apply to an elite PhD program for economics immediately after graduation, which afaik will require not only a large amount of economics knowledge but also a strong background in math. From what I've read of what CSS students do - hundreds of pages of reading and essays every week - it seems like the economics aspect is a secondary consideration and almost entirely theory-based and not mathematical. I think I would enjoy CSS either way but securing a path through grad school is my priority. But I also am not keen on majoring in solely economics because of how much the humanities aspect of CSS, as well as the structure of the college itself, appeals to me. So: would the CSS prepare me for a PhD program in economics, and if not, what kind of grad degrees do CSS majors tend to pursue?

I got accepted into Wesleyan and Babson as a transfer student. I want to do business (more entreprenuership or management stuff) and I know that Babson is more known in the business world, but I think that I will enjoy Wesleyan better. I like kids and environment much better at Wesleyan than Babson and like the option of all the liberal arts classes. However, I am not sure if it is smart to go to Wesleyan and do business. Do Wesleyan grads get into the top MBA programs? How much does the liberal arts education help in the business world? Are there good connections and opportunities? Thanks!

Wesleyan vs U-Michigan Political Science Major

I'm an international student and just got off Wesleyan's waitlist several days ago. I find it really difficult to decide between U-Michigan and Wesleyan University (intended major: Political Science/Government, probably double major in Economics or Statistics). On the one hand, Michigan’s political science department is ranked 4th in the US. But it’s graduate school ranking and I’m afraid its undergraduate program is not that strong due to large number of students. Its faculty is great but I’m afraid professors will focus on their research and don’t care much about undergraduates. On the other hand, Wesleyan is a small private liberal arts college with 1:8 faculty-student ration and much more small classes. But I also fear this kind of school is too ‘elitism’ for an international student. I prefer Wesleyan due to its high-quality undergraduate education. (Although I like Wesleyan's CSS major a lot, I probably can't major in CSS since I'll enter into Wesleyan as a sophomore and students need to apply for CSS at the second semester of their freshmen year.) In the future, I’ll probably go to law school to pursue a JD or graduate school to purse a PhD in Political Science. I’m not sure whether a big public university or a tiny liberal arts college can make me better prepared for my future? Maybe being a undergraduate at Michigan makes it easier for me to get into Michigan Law School? Maybe Wesleyan is more prestigious among YLS, HLS and NYU law school in New England? For the tuition, I don't have financial aid as an international students and Wesleyan's cost of attendance is about 6000usd higher than Michigan's annually. I know it's difficult to compare between a big public university and a small liberal arts college. But if possible, could anyone give some suggestions on how to chose? Thank you so much!!!

Jewish Life Questions

I'm transferring to Welseyan and have some questions about the Jewish life. How many of you go to chabad vs to the on campus jewish life events? How are shabbats there? Are there any more traditional Jews on campus? How is it missing classes for the holidays? Are most of the professors nice about it? I heard that a majority of students are anti-Israel or not necessarily pro Israel. Is this true? Is it a big deal on campus? Any events happening during the week- classes, etc? Do a lot of kids go to New York for shabbat and Jewish events since it is so Jewish there? Thanks for the answers everyone!!! I'm coming from a school with big Jewish life, so I am a little nervous about Wesleyan.

What is the lowest New SAT score you would submit?

Given that Wesleyan is test optional, in your opinion (and I know most of us on this site are students or parents, not admission officers, just making our best guess based on the experiences of those we have heard about), what is the lowest new SAT score an unhooked applicant should submit? I know their website recommends not to submit under the 25th percentile, but I am wondering if an unhooked applicant's should be substantially higher than that? Are scores between the 40th and 75th percentiles good to submit, because then they will not wonder if your scores are lower?

Wesleyan Transfer

Hello! I was accepted as a transfer applicant for the fall of 2017. I am seriously considering going to Wesleyan but have a few questions/concerns and would be so appreciative for feedback of any of these points. Social life: Is student life at Wesleyan vibrant and active despite being a small school? How well attended are campus events and is the night life at Wesleyan fun/open? People: Girl to boy ratio; I have heard that there are very few straight guys at Wesleyan- do people find this valid? What is the dating scene at Wesleyan like? Is making friends easy at Wesleyan? I would be transferring as a junior and Wes only takes 60 transfers each fall meaning there wouldn't be an extensive transfer community. Also, Wesleyan is significantly more expensive than my current school so if I transfer would have to commute (I live ~15 mins away from Wes) I feel like all of these factors may make it difficult to establish a good group of friends. Can any one speak to the openness/ inclusivity at Wesleyan. Is it the kind of place with approachable people? Is the student body generally friendly? Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to provide an answer to one or more of these questions. I have to decide by next week so any input is greatly valued and appreciated!

Wesleyan vs Grinnell

Hi, I was admitted to both schools. I didn't apply for financial aid at either school, though Grinnell gave me a $20k per year merit scholarship. Finances aren't really a factor. I am interested in the humanities and social sciences, including sociology, history, English, and political science. I am also potentially interested in film. My main questions are: Which school will have better connections, grad school placement, etc? Which school is stronger for the subjects I'm interested in? What are you opinions/experiences of these schools? The money that Grinnell gave me is enticing, but it's not really a huge factor. I am interested in doing research with professors. Overall, I like Wesleyan better for its culture, location, and academics. I will visit both of them in the upcoming weeks. I come from a competitive high school, so I am not looking for a cut-throat environment. Wesleyan pros: I like the culture from what I've seen (eclectic, creative, independent), great programs, especially film and CSS, good grad school placement, good outcomes from what I've seen so far Wesleyan cons: low endowment which might affect me since I'll be full pay (not getting my money's worth?) Grinnell pros: lots of money which means money for funding, good grad school placement (at least for PhD productivity), smaller class sizes than Wesleyan (idk) Grinnell cons: located in middle of nowhere, low yield rate (no one seems to want to go there), half the size of Wesleyan, doesn't have that *wow* factor or culture Thanks!

Hey there! I am interested in Wes as a potential college option and am wondering if my academic/ extracurricular profile is up to par? Can anyone help me out? :) GPA- 3.95 UW Class Rank- top 10%, spot 1 or 2. A or A- average overall. 6 AP classes, 2 honors classes (only honors classes available at my HS). Member of NHS, Student Council, and on the board of three activist school groups. Total of 50 hrs community service. 3-year internship at Women's Resource Center.

Is Wesleyan still prestigious?

I know Wesleyan can't be compared to WASP (Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore and Pomona), not only in ranking but also in reputation. But I'm wondering that is Wesleyan still in the same tier with Middlebury, CMC, Carleton, Colby etc. In addition, is Wesleyan still prestigious among top law schools (Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Chicago, Columbia, NYU etc.) and graduate schools?

Chance me?

I'm a rising senior planning to apply regular decision, I'm curious what my chances are at Wesleyan, it is one of my top choices. GPA: 3.94 unweighted (school doesn't offer weighted GPA) SAT: 1470 (750 reading/writing, 720 math) - planning to retake in August, hoping to boost score to low 1500s Subject Tests: 720 literature, 650 Biology M (might retake) Class rank: Not sure but definitely in the top 10%, likely top 5% Coursework: I am an IB Diploma Candidate, so all 6 of my classes for junior and senior year are IB. My courseload is pretty much the most rigorous offered at my school. Also took honors science, history, and English freshman/sophomore year and I am above grade level in math. Sophmore year I took HL IB math (pre-calculus) but got a B, also got a B in IB HL Math as a junior for calculus. All other classes are As. Awards: American Association of University Women Award for Excellence in Science (nominated by school, one of 3 students from my HS chosen) Harvard Book Prize (given by Harvard Club of Seattle to one junior at my school per year) Honor Roll ECs: Varsity Cross Country runner (4 years, lettered all 3 years so far, likely to be captain senior year). I also ran Track sophomore and junior year. School Newspaper (re-read paper as a junior after previous advisor left and paper was discontinued. Currently serving as Editor-in-Chief. Also I couldn't join the paper freshman/sophomore year because I didn't have transportation. Will continue to be Editor-in-Chief senior year) Internship with a local online newspaper (this summer, might continue during the school year) Shine Bright (non-profit ran by HS students that leads a weekly after school club at local elementary schools. I've volunteered with them since I was a sophomore and as a junior I was the core leader/head of the program at my location. I will continue to be a core leader as a senior and will also write the newsletter for all 6 locations) National Honor Society member (2 years) Please let me know what you think my chances are and what I can do to make my application stronger. Thank you!

My daughter wants to try for a varsity team and she is preparing to submit her transcript info. She was asked to send in her test scores but she was planning on applying as test optional. Does she need to submit test scores if she wants to be recruited?

What are my chances of getting into Wesleyan University?

I visited Wesleyan University and I would LOVE to go there, but I want to see if applying was practical since I know they are a highly competitive school. Note: I plan on not turning in my SAT or ACT scores. I do, however, plan on interviewing and possibly applying early decision. - GPA: 4.21 (I'm expecting this to go up because...) - 3 APs as off Junior year with all As (and I'm supposed to be taking 4 next year)(there are about 9-12 APs offered at my school depending on the year) - Was in all regular classes freshmen year but was moved up to all honors sophomore year (except elective and science but I ended it with a 97 average) and an AP, and was in all honors and AP classes my junior year except for Psychology, which was my elective (98 average). - Have been on high honors list every semester and year - Go to a college preparatory boarding school in rural Georgia - Have participated in musicals (was recognized as assistant vocal director Junior year) and choruses since I was in 4th grade, I play 5ish instruments (piano, guitar, ukulele, mandolin, and kinda flute) - Participate heavily in writing club, model UN, and our environmental stewardship club which I help raise funds for and run social media for (with my friend) - Have done cross country and cirque for athletics I'm still in the summer of my junior year, so if there is something I can do before/during senior year to improve my chances, that would be great to know. Thank you! PS- Don't be afraid to be real with me. I want to know what my chances are, whether they're good or bad.

How hard is it to get into the 3-2 Program with Columbia from Wesleyan? Is it very competitive? How many students usually apply and how many spots are there in it? Thanks.
