I just wanted to start this thread because I am excited about college applications. I find it pretty weird that Wesleyan does not have any additional supplements.

Interview
idk how active this page is, but any help would be appreciated. i have an interview at Wesleyan tomorrow, and while i know some pretty basic stuff about the college, is there any notable information about Wesleyan that draw people to it? just wondering how i'd answer the "why Wesleyan" interview question. thanks!

Chance me at Wesleyan (w/out test scores)
My problem is that, despite being a pretty strong student, I've had immense trouble with standardized tests. I don't know why... I just can't focus on the SAT/ACT. I just can't score well. I'm trying again one more time after taking a prep class, hopefully I'll see improvement. But luckily for me, one of the colleges on my list (Wesleyan) is test-optional!
GPA:
U/W: 3.96
Weighted cumulative: 4.465
Weighted 10-12: 4.81 (that's assuming I get all As senior year—I know they don't take this GPA, but I'm trying to get across that I took very rigorous classes. I've taken all honors/AP in 11th and am doing the same 12th)
Rank: I believe I'm at least top 9%, but that's all my school releases to students. We don't get specific rank.
Test Scores:
Now the embarrassing part. I'm not submitting these, of course... but I just thought you should know why, maybe :/
SAT: 1340
Reading/writing: 650, Math: 690
ACT: 27
(English is my only decent section on this test, let's just say that...)
I will be taking Math II and Spanish SAT subjects soon. I don't know how those will go, but I'm expecting to do well on Spanish. I may submit these?
AP Scores:
AP Euro (4), AP Psychology (5), AP Spanish (5), APUSH (5), Statistics (4)
I'll be sending these, I think. Not as bad as my standardized tests, lol
Awards/Honors (not anything too distinct):
National Spanish Exam gold medal
Math achievement awards- AP Statistics and Pre-Calculus Honors
Honorable mention in an art contest
AP Scholar with distinction
Extracurriculars:
Volunteer Club, Interact. Leadership positions: secretary 10th & 11th, Vice President 12th. (4 years)
Badminton Team (3 years)
Women in STEM Club, Vice President. (3 years)
Guitar and other music composition (4 years, more of a passion)
Jazz Band (2 years)
Anatomy Club. IT Officer. (3 years)
WASC Student Leader (1 year)
Internship at a software company doing QA (one summer)
I've also taken a biology course at a community college (worth credit). I've also taken CS 101 and a Statistical Modeling class online, but these 2 don't give credit.
Other information:
Race/Ethnicity: Asian (Indian)
Sex: Female
Income: very above average
Hooks: none :')
I think I'm a good student overall, but I do have the test score thing holding me back. I guess what I really want to know is if not submitting test scores is going to hold me back. I feel that my application is a lot stronger without standardized test scores, but I'm fearful that Wesleyan won't be accepting of me not submitting test scores because I don't really have a hook that would keep me from success on those exams. I just... suck. Lol. Crossing my fingers that I'll do well on the upcoming ACT I'm taking, but I'm doubtful.
I would REALLY appreciate feedback because this test score thing has been bothering me so much :( I feel like I won't get any school I want because of it... if you guys have any further questions about me, I'd be happy to answer!

Naked Dorm and Undies in Olin
Question for current Wes students - do you still have the Naked Dorm (WesCo) and Undies in Olin? Are there any other 'special' traditions at Wesleyan that are unknown to the outside world?

Wesleyan's Ludicrous U.S. News Ranking
#21? Again?
I attended Bowdoin (ranked #3 this year!) as a first year and transferred to Wesleyan (then ranked 6th or 7th). Some deep flaw inheres within the U.S. News methodology. I know this will draw fire, but placing Washington & Lee, Colby, Hamilton, Grinnell, and Colgate ahead of Wes does not comport with the reality of these schools. More than one person in publishing, my field, has told me that U.S. News has a longstanding "boner" (not the good kind) for Wesleyan, which should never have dropped below the top 10. It seems likely that this distortion of reality will have the effect of a self-fulfilling prophecy and affect the type of students who apply next year. The intellectual vitality and panoramic offerings of the school dwarf those of the schools listed above as well as others ranked higher than Wesleyan.

Wesleyan Culture/Climate
D is interested in molecular bio. major and, by all accounts, Wesleyan has a great program. D is a serious student - quiet nondrinker type looking for a diverse student body but one that is more focused on academics than activism. Would Wesleyan be a good fit?

Another Genius Award

Wesleyan? Carleton? Mac? ED Decisions
I was almost certain I wanted to apply ED to Wesleyan until this weekend, when I toured Carleton and Macalester in Minnesota. Both of those schools had an incredible sense of community that I hadn't really seen anywhere else. What's the Wesleyan community like, both among the student body and in student-professor relationships?
I love the artsy, unconventional vibes that Wes has, but I'm nervous about not feeling that strong sense of camaraderie with the whole student body. What are people's thoughts on Wes's student body, and how it compares to Carleton and/or Macalester? Thanks so much!

Some questions about Wesleyan in general, students, and film studies
I'm really interested in Wesleyan and I love the film program, but I have some concerns about whether I would be a good fit.
1. Are there "normal" and intellectual students? I know thats a vague question, i'll try to explain: I know Wesleyan students are known for being very quirky and artsy. While I like this culture to a certain extent, I'd like to be friends with people who are grounded and not too weird. (I've read about naked dorms and sex parties at Wes...)
2. Is the social justice/political atmosphere overbearing? My tour guide was very involved in social justice and i've already heard a lot about the strong political climate. I'm a Democrat, but I don't want politics to be a huge part of my college experience. I'm particularly concerned about how the newspaper was defunded after publishing a conservative op-ed, and how students are demanding that the film department diversify their staff and globalize the curriculum. I'm not a big fan of super excessive political correctness. (I can live with if, I just roll my eyes)
3. What are parties like? Are there lots of alcohol and drugs? Is the stoner reputation accurate? I'm ok with normal drinking but I don't want to go to crazy parties where people are getting blackout drunk and doing drugs. I also don't want to be around a bunch of people smoking weed. I know there will be people smoking at any college, but I don't want the "stoner dude" vibe to be too prominent.
4. Are people nice? I mainly just want to go to a college where everybody is nice and I can make good friends.
5. How hard is it to get into the film major? I know you have to get a certain grade in the intro classes then apply. If I want it and take it seriously, will I get in? I wouldn't want to go to Wesleyan for the program only to not get in.
6. How much are students in the film major focused on production? It's obviously a studies/theory based education first, but I still want to be writing and making movies.
7. How easy is it to double major in film and something else non-STEM? I want to have options in case a career in film doesn't work out (which it probably wont)
8. Does the film program do a good job of getting students entry-level internships/jobs in Hollywood? Is the "Wesleyan Mafia" really that prominent in the industry?
I'm sure some of these questions are stupid but i'm just really trying to get a good feel for the school to see if I might want to apply ED. Thanks!

Wesleyan Writing Supplement for Film Portfolio
) I just wonder if it is a mistake to apply as a film major? It seems like it is competitive so you are more likely to get rejected by declaring your intentions, especially since it's subjective if they like your films. Are you better off applying undeclared?

ed chances?
Hi! I just applied ED1 to Wesleyan today and I am very, very nervous!
here's a little information about me:
White female from NYS,
33 ACT (36 E, 36 R, 32 S, 29 M)
93.37 GPA (eeeeek),
1st person in the 3rd decile (but at a very small, very overachieving HS)
Subject tests: 740 World History, waiting on literature
Will graduate with 10 APs, 2 Honors (English 11 Honors, French 4 Honors) and 2 Dual Credit courses (Syracuse U Project Advance US History and English). I have 5 years of math (taking non-AP calc this year; math is very difficult for me) 5 years of lab science, and 4 years of French. I am in my school's science research program as well.
Scores:
AP World History (self-study) - 4
AP Human Geography (self-study) - 4
AP US Gov (self-study) - 4
AP Comparative Gov (self-study) - 5
AP Environmental Science - 5
Taking this year:
AP Macroeconomics
AP Microeconomics
AP Biology
AP Psychology
AP Euro
Extracurriculars- Co-president of Model UN, president of the Quiz Bowl team that won Small School nationals in 2017, started a civic engagement club in 11th grade after having an incredibly eye-opening experience shadowing New York State legislators for 4 days, singer-songwriter, high school theater, an intern for local county executive campaign.
Recommendations: sending my SUPA US history teacher, my English 11 Honors teacher, and my Science Research/APES teacher, who have been three incredibly influential mentors in my life, and will probably write me good recommendations
Essay - about how I'm a geography nerd and this pushed me to join the quiz bowl team, which broadened my academic exploration. Probably pretty good, not exceptional?? I don't even know anymore!
Sending you all love and positivity through this process!

Wesleyan vs. Bates
*ALSO POSTED ON BATES DISCUSSION GROUP
Hello! I am a high school senior who is currently being recruited in several NESCAC schools, but I have narrowed it down to either Wesleyan University or Bates College. I have visited both schools and I absolutely love them, but I need to turn in my ED app within a month.
I absolutely adore the campus at Bates and I like the sporty/outdoorsy vibe. I liked that the classes are very small and everyone seemed very laid back and friendly. I visited Lewiston and liked the blue-collar vibe. Also the food is amazing.
Wesleyan also had a really cool student body. I have never seen a school that had so much school spirit at a volleyball game. Everyone I talked to seemed very proactive and down-to-earth, but I am worried about the ratio of private school kids to public school kids. I talked to the some of the professors and sat in on a few classes and enjoyed them.
I need to turn in my application soon, so I have these final questions, but any extra comments would be extremely appreciated.
- How are the Environmental Science programs compare? I understand that both are excellent, but which school is more renowned for Earth/Environmental Science?
- How is the general social life on campus? Do athletes mix with non-athletes? How often are events on campus?
- What are the major differences between these schools?
- How do Lewiston and Middletown compare as college towns?
- What are the best and worst qualities of each school?
Thanks!

Are test scores required for the recruiting process?
My daughter wants to try for a varsity team and she is preparing to submit her transcript info. She was asked to send in her test scores but she was planning on applying as test optional. Does she need to submit test scores if she wants to be recruited?

Chance me?
I'm a rising senior planning to apply regular decision, I'm curious what my chances are at Wesleyan, it is one of my top choices.
GPA: 3.94 unweighted (school doesn't offer weighted GPA)
SAT: 1470 (750 reading/writing, 720 math) - planning to retake in August, hoping to boost score to low 1500s
Subject Tests: 720 literature, 650 Biology M (might retake)
Class rank: Not sure but definitely in the top 10%, likely top 5%
Coursework:
I am an IB Diploma Candidate, so all 6 of my classes for junior and senior year are IB. My courseload is pretty much the most rigorous offered at my school. Also took honors science, history, and English freshman/sophomore year and I am above grade level in math.
Sophmore year I took HL IB math (pre-calculus) but got a B, also got a B in IB HL Math as a junior for calculus. All other classes are As.
Awards:
American Association of University Women Award for Excellence in Science (nominated by school, one of 3 students from my HS chosen)
Harvard Book Prize (given by Harvard Club of Seattle to one junior at my school per year)
Honor Roll
ECs:
Varsity Cross Country runner (4 years, lettered all 3 years so far, likely to be captain senior year). I also ran Track sophomore and junior year.
School Newspaper (re-read paper as a junior after previous advisor left and paper was discontinued. Currently serving as Editor-in-Chief. Also I couldn't join the paper freshman/sophomore year because I didn't have transportation. Will continue to be Editor-in-Chief senior year)
Internship with a local online newspaper (this summer, might continue during the school year)
Shine Bright (non-profit ran by HS students that leads a weekly after school club at local elementary schools. I've volunteered with them since I was a sophomore and as a junior I was the core leader/head of the program at my location. I will continue to be a core leader as a senior and will also write the newsletter for all 6 locations)
National Honor Society member (2 years)
Please let me know what you think my chances are and what I can do to make my application stronger. Thank you!

What are my chances of getting into Wesleyan University?
I visited Wesleyan University and I would LOVE to go there, but I want to see if applying was practical since I know they are a highly competitive school.
Note: I plan on not turning in my SAT or ACT scores. I do, however, plan on interviewing and possibly applying early decision.
- GPA: 4.21 (I'm expecting this to go up because...)
- 3 APs as off Junior year with all As (and I'm supposed to be taking 4 next year)(there are about 9-12 APs offered at my school depending on the year)
- Was in all regular classes freshmen year but was moved up to all honors sophomore year (except elective and science but I ended it with a 97 average) and an AP, and was in all honors and AP classes my junior year except for Psychology, which was my elective (98 average).
- Have been on high honors list every semester and year
- Go to a college preparatory boarding school in rural Georgia
- Have participated in musicals (was recognized as assistant vocal director Junior year) and choruses since I was in 4th grade, I play 5ish instruments (piano, guitar, ukulele, mandolin, and kinda flute)
- Participate heavily in writing club, model UN, and our environmental stewardship club which I help raise funds for and run social media for (with my friend)
- Have done cross country and cirque for athletics
I'm still in the summer of my junior year, so if there is something I can do before/during senior year to improve my chances, that would be great to know. Thank you!
PS- Don't be afraid to be real with me. I want to know what my chances are, whether they're good or bad.

Is Wesleyan still prestigious?
I know Wesleyan can't be compared to WASP (Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore and Pomona), not only in ranking but also in reputation. But I'm wondering that is Wesleyan still in the same tier with Middlebury, CMC, Carleton, Colby etc. In addition, is Wesleyan still prestigious among top law schools (Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Chicago, Columbia, NYU etc.) and graduate schools?
