Transferring: Information About Schools
Hello Everyone!
I am currently in the process of researching a number of different schools with the intent to apply as a transfer student, and I would appreciate any insight into the schools listed below in terms of the strength of the departments I am interested in pursuing, how they compare to one another (which is, perhaps, a bit of a silly question in that they are all somewhat similar in terms of academic quality), and graduate school placement is also of interest.
Currently, I am a student at Marlboro College, intending to study some amalgam of the humanities and social sciences (likely some combination of Anthropology and Sociology and History). If I recall correctly, my GPA is currently somewhere in the 3.9 area; I've become involved in a few different clubs on campus, and I will be working with one of my professors on a project this coming semester. The size and focus of class, the interdisciplinary environment of the departments, the access and relationship with professors, and the process of the Plan of Concentration were all factors in my matriculating. However, though I have formed wonderful relationships with a few professors, I am not quite satisfied with the school. Academic rigor is a primary motivation for looking elsewhere, as I felt classes were too easy. In addition, due to ever-decreasing rates of enrollment, the new president instituted a program that will give a new student from each state a full scholarship should they choose to attend. My fear, of course, is that this program, given Marlboro's small endowment, will impact my financial aid such that I will not be able to afford to continue my studies.
The schools I am interested in applying to, in no particular order, are as follows: Reed College, Swarthmore College, Wesleyan University, College of William and Mary, Bates College, Oberlin College, Carleton College, University of Virginia, and the University of Michigan.
If I had to choose favorites, I would say Reed and Swarthmore are probably most appealing to me. That being said, there are programs of study at some of the others that are particularly appealing to me-the Classical and Medieval Studies programs at Bates and the College of Social Studies at Wesleyan, for example.
Any information or insight is greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

Advice for Prospective Transfer Student
I am currently a freshman at Franklin & Marshall College and while I have formed close relationships with my professors, I am extremely dissatisfied with the social atmosphere of the school. Despite espousing a commitment to diversity, the school is dominated by white, wealthy and athletic individuals who ostracize students who do not fit into this demographic. The school has attempted to combat this; however, the students who perpetuate this do not attend a single diversity panel or event so the problem is not truly being addressed. There have been numerous incidents this academic year that have been motivated by racism, and I do not see an end in sight. Additionally, while most students are academically inclined, I haven't found the intellectual atmosphere that I originally sought in a prospective college. Most students are only interested in discussing intellectual topics when they are in the classroom or in the presence of a professor. While I have met a few students who are genuinely nice, well-rounded and intellectual, they are far and few. I cannot bear to imagine myself continuing at a school that is structured to exclusively benefit a select group of privileged individuals. In fact, I feel completely miserable now.
I applied to Wesleyan last year as a Regular Decision candidate, and was rejected. I do not know if I should apply for the fall semester or the spring semester, as my GPA this semester is only a 3.0. My high school GPA was a 4.0., but I did not attend an academically reputable high school. If I am able to get all A's this coming semester, my GPA should be significantly higher, which I suppose would improve my chances for spring admission. I am heavily involved in various organizations, clubs and faculty-student committees. I have attained leadership positions and have also won department awards for my writing. I also know that my professors would write wonderful letters of recommendation for me and I am seeking an internship at a well respected publishing firm in NYC for the summer. I am interested in studying Cognitive Science, Psychology and Creative Writing, so I know that I would most certainly benefit from Wesleyan's open curriculum. Do you think I have a shot at admission? Also, do you think I should apply for the fall or spring semester, considering my GPA?
Thank you!

Wesleyan needs some fundamental changes and a whole lot of cash!
Whether it's Soros's relative who attended, or Julia Louis-Dreyfus (heiress to billions), or some other superwealthy alum who donates, Wesleyan's paltry endowment needs a massive infusion of cash. However specious and unfair rankings are, Wesleyan's free fall from the top ten to just above 20 in USNews will powerfully influence the kids who apply. Making matters worse are the various institutional "initiatives" designed by Michael Roth that scream "low rent"--a 3-year BA, dropping standardized test requirements (all well and good if you're Bowdoin and at the top of the heap but not for Wes where it is right now), MOOCs!! Truly accomplished high school students are no longer taking Wesleyan seriously. And what's with the half-assed approach to fraternities--making them go co-ed. Just follow the example of Amherst, Williams, Bowdoin, and Middlebury: abolish, abolish, abolish. The current plan will simply **** off rich alumni members who have probably long since stopped donating anyway. At the level of curriculum, Wesleyan should emphasize writing across all the majors in the way that Amherst and Davidson do. A mandatory senior thesis wouldn't hurt either. The current president inspires little confidence. I've read his Freudian musings and just want to laugh hysterically. It's as if he has not digested the profound developments in psychoanalysis over the past 60 years--object relations, self-psychology, relationality/intersubjectivity. In his communications (and failures to communicate with students), he comes off as a mean-spirited cipher, and I honestly have no idea how he got the job.

Most Popular LAC in America
In all likelihood, Wesleyan is the most popular LAC in the country, with over 12,000 applications this year, an increase of 22% over the year before: Our research indicated that going test optional would bring us more applications from under-represented groups—and indeed this has been the case. But our application growth among those who did submit scores was also in double figures.

Lexton '08 and Marcus '13 Named to Forbes "30 Under 30"
This year, the theme of Forbes Magazine’s “30 Under 30” was “Today’s Brightest Young Stars and Future Leaders of Everything.” The list itself consists of 20 different categories, with Lexton and Marcus named in the Social Entrepreneur category and the Scientist category respectively.

A "Wesceleb"
This is a regular feature of the Argus, to highlight a familiar face on campus about whom people might be naturally curious. I've read dozens of them over the years, but this one just grabbed me. There is something so quintessentially "Wesleyan" about his story:

Deferred from ED2?
Hi!!
I just found out that I was deferred from ED2 to the regular decision pool. I'm a little confused because I thought most schools only reject you at that point. Do you guys have any tips for what I should do between now and when they release the decisions?

Scalia at Wesleyan
Justice Antonin Scalia died this morning. It doesn't seem that long ago that he devoted a day visiting Wesleyan:

Anyone admitted to Wes with C's or C+'s on transcript? Asking on behalf of a family member. Thanks!

Wes and Calculus
Since I'm very interested in Wesleyan, I was reading "The Gatekeepers" - though it's pretty old, I think the general process is still similar. In the book, they said they look for three "markers" in applicants: all 4 years of a foreign language, classes in the three core sciences, and math up to calculus. Cue concern, because I only have 2 of the 3 - next year (12th grade) I'll be taking honors precalc, not AP calc.
Looking at their site, they say ~15% of each incoming class hasn't taken calc in high school, but I don't really like those odds, especially when you think about all the high schools that don't offer calc at all (obviously applicants from those schools can't be penalized for not taking it). So . . . assuming I'm not going into STEM (and my ECs and whatnot clearly show that) is not having calculus enough to get your application immediately tossed? If there are any current Wes students on this board, did you or anyone you know not take calc in HS (in a HS that offered it)?

Email asking for tax forms that are on IDOC and I verified that they were sent to the school
We just received an email saying daughter's financial aid application was missing 2015 tax forms and W2. They plainly show that they are on IDOC and I have the confirmation email that they were sent to Wesleyan. Daughter applied to 10 schools and we have not heard from anyone else that the financial aid app is incomplete. Anyone else have this problem?

WesFest
Do most admitted students who attend WesFest come by themselves, or do most bring a parent? I know there are plenty of opportunities for parents and students to go off and do separate things, and as a parent I would love to get to experience the event, but I'm trying to get a sense of whether it would actually be more fun for my daughter if she went completely on her own. What do most kids do? (She will be flying in, btw, and does plan to do an overnight on campus).

I Made a Dorm Tour Video (Wes Freshman)
What's up guys,
I'm a freshman at Wes and I recently posted a little dorm tour video on YouTube. Back when I was waiting on decisions / making my own selection, I was always trying to look for videos taken by students that captured the campus vibes.
I think my video gives you a nice feel of the place.
Here's the link if you're interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deAqPc4DVDQ
And if you want more, I mostly do skating on my channel, but I have a bunch more videos that capture the life at Wes. Check the snapchat dump video, and day in the life 2 + day in the life 3, for example.
Also, Day in the life 4 was filmed for the purpose of showing people my typical weekday at Wes, and it's dropping in a few days, so if you're interested in that too hit the sub button on my channel.
Hope this helps some of you out, good luck to everybody who hasn't heard back yet.
PS feel free to ask me questions about Wes in the comment section of any of my videos, I read everything.
