Hey all, just thought I'd make a topic for those of us who got waitlisted.
I'm pretty blown, but I'm still waiting for the rest of my decisions, Wes was one of my top schools, but it's the first one I heard back from and I'm happy that I didn't get rejected, because i feel like that means I'm within striking distance of the other colleges I'm waiting on. I'm definitely gonna stay on this one if I get rejected/listed from the rest though.
So how does everyone feel? What are you doing in regards to the decision? And does anyone know Wesleyan's waitlist stats?

College Decision
I have been admitted to 7 different liberal arts schools and while I have some preferences I have been unable to visit all of them and would like to hear some other thoughts
Obviously money matters and if anyone has an experience where a school I have gotten more scholarship from has revoked money later or a school that has given you more money after appeal please let me know
Did anyone who is now at Wesleyan get into some of these schools and possibly have a similar decision? Any advice?
Whitman College ($13,000 merit)
Kenyon College ($25,000 merit)
Willamette University ($24,000 merit)
Wesleyan University (about $11,000 in grants/work study)
Carleton College (about $15,000 work study/grants)
Macalester College (about $14,000 merit)
University of Redlands (about $30,000 merit)
Waiting: Pitzer
For students possibly looking at schools to apply to here are the other results I got
Wait-Listed: Grinnell
Rejected: Claremont Mckenna College
I am IB Diploma Candidate, 5 HL Classes, 4.02 Weighted GPA (about 3.8 unweighted I think), Super-score SAT (660 CR, 650 Writing, 760 Math/2070 Composite) done lots of clubs/sports if you have any questions as a high-school student feel free as well

Why Choose Wesleyan?
Have been accepted into Wesleyan - whoop! Why should I choose them over other universities. (I am also an international student)

Allbritton Fellowship
I was just accepted into Wesleyan a few weeks ago and I just received an email notifying me of my selection as an Allbritton Fellow.
Is anyone an Allbritton Fellow? If you are, or know anyone who is/was, what are the opportunities and restrictions that are attached to it? What have people done with the fellowship in the past as well?

Wesleyan vs. Vassar vs. Haverford vs. Middlebury
Posted this yesterday on the Vassar thread, but since I think my choice will come down to Vassar and Wes, I figured I'd post it here as well.
After getting all of my RD acceptances, I have narrowed my decision down to these four FANTASTIC schools. I applied everywhere as undecided, but I know I am interested in studying English, Theatre, and possibly the social/physical sciences. I am definitely looking for a more arts and humanities focused college experience though.
I am a recently out gay male, so gay population/lgbtqa presence is a relatively important factor for me. (I know all of these schools are super accepting, so that's not really an issue for me).
I am about as un-athletic as a soft boiled egg, and my main extracurricular interests are music and theatre. More specifically, it is pretty important to me that I have the opportunity to play in a jazz band and participate in musical theatre wherever I decide to go.
In terms of financial aid, Haverford offered me the best package, Middlebury offered me a good package, Vassar offered me an okay package, and I am still waiting to hear from Wesleyan because there was a mistake. My family is not rich, but I do have some money in a college savings account that I can put toward my tuition.
Right now my top choices are Vassar and Wesleyan, but I'm still not 100% sure. I haven't visited either since last year, but will be visiting in the coming weeks. (I unfortunately cannot make it to WesFest.) I know Vassar and Wesleyan both fit my desires in terms of music/theatre/lgbtqa and also have great academics, but I know that Middlebury is a TEENY bit more prestigious and would also cost less. I like the campus culture at both Vassar and Wesleyan, but I'm not sure if I'm trendy enough to keep up with everybody. The preppiness of Middlebury and the small size of Haverford are a bit frightening.
I've been putting a lot of thought into this decision, but if there's anyone else out there who can provide more insight it would be much appreciated! :)

Wesleyan Student Council war on the school paper
At the risk of provoking strong reactions, I am curious what Wes students, parents and alumni think about the ongoing effort by the Wesleyan student government to intimidate the school newspaper into silencing unpopular views in its editorial pages.
For anyone not familiar with the issue, last fall the paper published an op-ed from a student that questioned whether the BLM movement was contributing toward violent rhetoric or actions against some law enforcement. There was certainly ample reason to disagree with the opinion expressed in the student editorial. But rather than limit the response to counter opinions in the paper, some students (and faculty apparently) petitioned the student government to partially defund the paper as well as other demands such as dedicating part of the paper to a section solely curated by those protesting the offending letter, rather than by the editorial staff. Note there is no suggestion that the editorial staff was refusing to publish counter or alternative POV’s.
There are of course multiple sides to this story. It can and was argued that the paper receives a disproportionate amount of student media funding (as do most school papers) so why not use the money for publications representing some of the specific minority communities within Wes instead? It was also argued there were merely forcing the paper to embrace the digital age by having less money for print editions to instead focus on online delivery. But even if that’s a valid idea to discuss, the timing is wrong. The actions of the student government very clearly were meant to punish the paper for having dared to publish the student’s opinion and to demonstrate solidarity with the opinions of those protesting the letter. And the persecution continues. After the story went national, the paper received donations from alumni and others that they used to create a reserve fund in the event of future censorship efforts (and I don’t use the word censorship lightly but in this case it is effectively the [student] government trying to suppress opinions, which fits the spirit of the word). The stu-co’s response has been to cut off funds again to force them to use up the donations so they once again have no money in reserve and will be at the mercy of the politically correct overlords.
Here’s the crux of my question – where are the adults in the room? How could reasonably enlightened, educated people not see that trying to suppress opinions they don’t like, rather than rationally counter them, is inconsistent with democracy and not a long term way to achieve social justice? If it’s okay for the students at Wesleyan, then how can they morally object to conservatives trying to censor textbooks in Texas, as but one example? Democracy thrives on an open dialogue, not trying to deny anyone you disagree with a voice. The real danger is they may not like the nation that results if those in power are tolerated in unilaterally determining which opinions can be heard. Responsible faculty and administrators should be telling these people to grow up and give them valuable context, not be afraid to say anything negative lest they violate their safe space.
My other question is, does this kind of closed-mindset represent the dominant culture at Wesleyan? Or is it a small but apparently influential minority? What has school/community life been like for the student who’s opinion sparked these protests and attempts at censorship? Or for the members of the paper’s staff? Do a majority of Wesleyan students appreciate the value of a free press, or are they myopically focused on ends-justifying-the-means tactics like those on the student government appear to embrace? It’s a sincere line of questioning relevant to prospective students and their families.

Minimum Transfer GPA
I'm interested in transferring to Wesleyan as a junior to finish my English degree after having taken a leave of absence from my original alma mater. Is there a specific minimum GPA that a transfer student such as myself should have in order to be seriously considered?
I have a fairly good transcript and academic history, strong essay writing abilities, as well as outstanding extracurriculars.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Test Score Optional Deal/Chance
I recently visited Wesleyan, and one of the things that attracted me the most was their optional test-score report policy. This sounded perfect to me, as I feel like my biggest weakness will be my test scores (1820 on the SAT in December, aiming for an unlikely 30 on the ACT in June).
However, I was wondering how the absence of test scores would appear to admissions. What do they look for the most? I'm trying to decide whether I have a better chance without reporting scores.
My basic overview:
-4.45 GPA weighted, 4.0 unweighted (I believe?)
-3 APs Junior year, 5 APs senior year
-Hispanic girl, first generation, Virginia native
-Marching band, Japanese club, MUN, track
-NHS, English Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Japanese Governor's School
-Ambassador for college program, Saxophone section leader, many leadership awards, 40 hours of volunteer
-Most likely drum major next year, hopefully Questbridge scholar, running for NHS president, and hopefully going to a U Chicago summer session this summer
I'm also looking into UVA and Amherst as top choices. I know my test scores will bring me down, which is why I want to know if I have hope for Wesleyan.
Mention of any other small-medium liberal arts schools like Amherst and Wesleyan that are test score optional would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

Wes Rites
Three traditional Wes rites were accomplished this week. And for good or ill, they tell you a lot about the school and maybe give a hint as to whether this the right place for you:
1. Thesis: On Tuesday the Seniors who were doing Theses turned them in. Wes, like many fine universities, requires a thesis if you want to try for "honors" and Wes is deadly serious on what they will accept, so these are 100+ page tomes on original topics with significant research that the students, working closely with a faculty advisor, slaved away on for an entire year. Its hard work and impressive.
2. “Thesis Party”: At 4:00 on Tuesday, said seniors (with an audience) congregated and, as custom requires, they counted down the time to the 4 o’clock thesis deadline and then popped champagne and partied like they just won the world series (see pics on Wesleying);
3. “Undies in Olin”: Once a year, for many, many years, Wes students pull the same prank on unsuspecting families touring Wes. Just before the tour comes through the Olin library, by prearrangement all students strip down to their underwear and then try to look studious and unconcerned, like this is how they always study at Olin. The annual Undies in Olin prank happened today. Also pics of this on Wesleying.

Combined BA/MA program?
Can anyone provide some insight into this program at Wes? My daughter recently visited, and liked the school more than she thought she would (likely because I pushed hard fr the visit). One of the things that appears very attractive to her is the BA/MA program, probably in Neuroscience or Psych. Does anyone have any insight into the nuts and bolts of the program? How popular is it, how difficult to get in and complete, those types of things?
Thanks in advance.

Second Semester Grades and Getting Offer Revoked
Hey guys,
I've slacked off a bit in my senior year after getting into Wes, and my grades have gone from mostly A's to a mostly B's (3rd marking period GPA is about 3.5 vs. a HS average of about 4.2). My lowest grade was a B- in Calc, is there any risk of getting my FA decreased or the offer revoked?
Thanks!

Student social vibe at Wes
Wesleyan is on my son's very short list (to commit, he's already been accepted). All on the list great and roughly comparable in terms of academics, reputation, size, region, etc. His decision is largely coming down to student culture, vibe, etc. He's the opposite of judgmental so he cool if there are all kinds of people (in fact that's a plus for him), but he does want to know if he'll find a thriving group that like similar things to his high school friends. He's not athletic, not a drinker, not into drugs, non-political (he cringes as phrases like "safe spaces"), non-confrontational, somewhat introverted. His friends tend to unwind playing Wii games, watching movies, etc. He keeps busy with classes and extracurriculars but isn't obsessive with studies. He neither works TOO hard or plays TOO hard.
So can someone be not glued to his studies on the one hand but not into hard partying or political activism and into nerdy/geeky recreational activities find his people at Wes?

Freeman Asian Scholarship Finalist = Acceptance guaranteed?
Hello all,
I've just been notified that I was selected as a finalist for the Freeman Asian Scholarship in South Korea, which I'm assuming is one of the more cutthroat countries.
I know that the scholarship is extremely competitive, and thus I'm not getting my hopes too high.
What I do want to, though, is whether how likely it is that I'll be accepted regularly to the university (no financial aid, full pay) if I don't make the cut for the scholarship. My Freeman Addendum essay, which I'm guessing was a big boost for me, was one of the best supplements I've written - will that not be considered anymore in the regular international pool? Does anyone know if my application will get handed to a completely different group of admissions officers?
If they are seriously considering to let me attend Wes with a full tuition scholarship, is it pretty much a given that they will let me attend for 66k/year? Has there been any precedent of people being selected as a Freeman finalist without getting into the school itself..?
Sorry - I'm a bit jumpy/anxious after getting the notification out of the blue. If anyone could help me out, that would be very much appreciated. :)

Wesleyan vs Vassar
So my final choice really boils down to Wesleyan vs Vassar. I know there are a lot of threads on this topic already. I have read every single one. But I'd still like some new/updated info from current students or recent grads.
Here is a bit about me/my criteria:
- I want to major/double major in either studio art, political science(govt. at Wes), film, English or comp.sci.
- I am artsy (I like a good music/art scene), feminist, liberal and straight. Not ultraliberal though. I'm not into sports.
- I want a strong campus/dorm community life in which I can make lots of friends.
- I want a broad education. Quality of teaching is very, very important to me, even in areas which aren't in my interest areas. For example, I've heard Vassar has a bad math department. Is this true? Could anyone maybe shed some light on the comparative teaching quality in other subjects as well between Wes/Vassar? Is it true that Vassar's English department is better than Wes's?
- I'm into design and journalism. I'd love to work for a campus publication. I was also hoping to sort of join group projects with programmers for making apps and games. I understand that since these schools are artsy, such things will be less prevalent, but would you say that either Vassar or Wes is stronger?
- I want to go to a good grad school, maybe in business or a science
- Finally, I want to date at college. I'm a straight girl so am slightly worried about the skewed Vassar m/f ratio and the abundance of gay men (got absolutely nothing against them - but since dating is important to me, I see it as a point of interest at least).
I will be eternally grateful to anyone who can provide any information regarding what I've said or talk about their experiences at either school.
Am also going to post this on the Vassar boards.

Wesleyan or middlebury?
I am having trouble deciding between these schools...so I want to study econ/math. I enjoy these subjects and also want to go into finance. I wanted to know...
What school offers more finance opportunities?
What school will better prepare me for what I want?
What schools is recruited heavier and has better networking for finance?
What school has a better social scene?
