Hey, is anyone on CC shortlisted for the finalist interview? How are you guys preparing for it? Would also appreciate if past Freeman Asian scholars on CC can share some information about it. :)

Is Wes good for an English/writing major?

23F/60 credits. I'm curious to hear from any Eng/creative writing students about Wes's course offerings and professors, and if the school is worth the cost of attendance. The problem with my last school was that the professors weren't involved ... I didn't see myself making good connections to further my career. I want a college that has a strong creative community among students, and professors who want to see ENG majors get published and go places. Any thoughts? Thanks for your honest opinions.

Fictional Character Alert

Making a character a Wesleyan alumnus is a popular way of telegraphing who they are to television audiences. In addition to the long-running HIMYM regulars, Marshal, Ted and Lily (played by Jason Segel, Josh Radnor and Alyson Hannigan) there were intermittent roles in 30 Rock (Dot.com, the cool, faintly intellectual member of Tracy Morgan's entourage and Liz Lemon's boyfriend, Criss). Political directors in moderately liberal White House dramas also seem to bleed Cardinal Red: Who can forget series regular, Josh Lyman in The West Wing (who in a curious twist, was played by actual Wes alum, Brad Whitford?) The latest character is Lyor Boone who is making his second season appearance as Kiefer Sutherland's political director (of course) in the drama, "Designated Survivor". Boone is portrayed by Paulo Costanzo. The alumni boards lit up last week during this little scene: Back in the hallway, Lyor comes to the young Ocheole and asks what he’s doing. Apparently, the young man is writing his college application essay for Wesleyan. Lyor, an alumnus, takes it upon himself to help the kid write a proper essay—that is, straying far from one’s goals and plans in college. Lyor suggests writing about how the kid “heroically participated in a White House sit-in.” https://tvmoviefix.com/designated-survivor-season-2-episode-13-original-sin-recap-review-spoilers/

I know Wesleyan probably releases decisions on the 24th so it's too late to change anything, but hear me out- I'm stressed. I checked my regular schools for interview information mid-December, about a week too late to sign up for Wesleyan. How negatively will this affect me? Pls I'm realizing I love this school

Wesleyan is my D’s 2nd choice, she was deferred at Tufts for ED. Apparently she must email to Wesleyan asap to stay on waitlist. How can she frase it “Wesleyan remains my top choice? Remains one of my top choices sounds” . Very likely she’ll be rejected at tufts so she needs to give Wesleyan her best shot. Any advice?

Wesleyan Government Program

I'm interested in studying political science/government at whatever college I go to, and since I was accepted into Wesleyan, I was wondering what Wes's Government program was like. I've done a lot of research, but I want to know a little more... Put simply, how strong of a program is it? Less simply: -Are students satisfied with the program? -What internship/career/grad school opportunities do students have in the field of government? -How engaging and experienced are the professors? -How interesting and challenging are the classes? -Any other info you think I should know I know college is what you make of it, and so are the different programs that colleges offer, but I still want as much information as I can get before I make a decision. Any info would be greatly appreciated! :)

Bowdoin vs Wesleyan

I'm class of 2022 and was luckily accepted to both. I want to major in English and possibly minor in economics. Am an outdoorsy guy and love playing sports/soccer/ski/kayak, but also am looking for serious academic rigour and small classes. Cost is not a factor. I have already visited both and loved both of the campuses, though Middletown was a little depressing on the day. Any help narrowing down a choice between these 2 is highly appreciated. Thank you!

I know, I know; It's yet another one of those "vs" posts that reduces the college search process to a cold-cut comparison between indescribably unique schools. It's just that I've been doing a ton of research by myself and would love to be refreshed by an alternate perspective! What I want in a college: Academic interests: Government/political science, Writing (particularly creative writing), Sociology, and anything involving human rights. Social: I'd love to become a part of politically active groups focused on pursuing liberal causes like civil and minority rights. I would also be interested in literary and political publications. Also, I want a campus with a solid and vibrant queer presence because I'm straight as a rainbow. Student Body: I want a student body that, quite simply, cares a lot. I want to be surrounded by passionate minds in an inspiring environment. I want a lot of different perspectives and experiences to learn from. I would appreciate any insight that anyone can give, particularly from past or current students. Thank you so very much in advance. :)

For anyone from the previous classes who have been getting accepted off the waitlist,

For anyone from the previous classes who have been getting accepted off the waitlist, How to get accepted and get off the waitlist? I am showing interest as I could but they said that they don't have time to evaluate additional materials. My counselor emailed them and they said: "We will not know about potential spots from the waiting list until mid-May at the earliest, and even at that point we would be unlikely to have more than 1 or 2 spaces available" What are the additional materials should I send? Should I send an additional recommendation letter? I need help from anyone who got accepted off the waitlist. Wesleyan is my first choice for University. If accepted, I would absolutely come to campus in the fall. I am an international student by the way.

Wesleyan Premed Research

I'm a high school student interested in persuing the premed track at Wesleyan University for my undergrad. I was amazed by the fact that 89% of premed students get accepted to their top choice med school, but considering that Wesleyan is not a private research institution, what kind of research opportunities are available to undergrads seeking bio/chem related majors? Also, just out of curiosity, how is it possible that such a large percentage of students do go wherever they want for med school? Are there not many students on the premed track or do undergrads apply to less competitive schools??

WesFest: Missed opportunity to convert RD?

This might be a couple days premature, but my D returned from 2 days of WesFest as an ED admit and was completely underwhelmed. She hung with other ED attendees (all already love Wes and have committed!), and the general consensus was that the school did very little to convince RD attendees to commit. They saw no reason why any RD attendee would feel "loved" or swayed by the school's hospitality and commit after WesFest. How important are these revisit experiences to sealing the deal for RD admits? This is her first (and only) revisit, so her only points of comparison are friends who have revisited or are revisiting other LACs. When comparing the schedule of activities, level of engagement by staff/students and event "freebies", she felt Wes's offering came up woefully short. However, she enjoyed meeting the ED students and reconnecting with the campus again, so her love for the school remained strong! Curious what other students' experiences were like this week...

Having Reservations About Wes

I think Wes is an excellent fit for me, but my parents have some reservations about the school. 1. They feel that there's too big of a drug scene and that the administration is too lenient about it. 2. They're worried that Wes doesn't have that solid of a reputation with employers because of Wes's non-traditionalist approach to academics. 3. They're concerned that Wes students don't have good outcomes in general, be it employment, grad school, or internships. A lot of this comes from how Wes compares to other schools, particularly Middlebury. They think that Middlebury is more respected because it has a more traditional approach to everything. They feel that Wes students change their majors all over the place while Midd students are more focused. My thoughts are this: I think Wes's non-traditionalist flexibility is its greatest strength. Just because Middlebury students don't change their majors as much doesn't mean that Wes students aren't as focused as them. I think that it's Midd's higher amount of GenEd requirements that end up boxing students into majors earlier on, whereas Wes students are allowed to explore their options more, so they do. I would greatly appreciate any info people have that could support or counter my parents' reservations as listed above. I am going to visit Middlebury and give it a chance, but I still believe Wes is the best for me. However, if there are reasons to think otherwise, I'd rather know now than later on down the road.

Will I fit in at Wes?

I applied to all the New England LACS and only got into Wesleyan. I'm sloppy preppy, somewhat conservative and sporty /outdoorsy. I'm also musical and love to think outside of the box as well. I'm nervous that Wes is going to be too artsy/hip Am I going to fit in?

Concerning low admit rate from my school?

I go to a small alternative school in NYC that's pretty well established and known amongst colleges and extremely competitive to get into (I think 1500-3000 applicants each year for around 60 spots). I was looking at my schools Naviance (which is updated) and our admit rate to Wesleyan was so shockingly low... We've had 37 kids apply to Wes, and 2 accepted. What does this mean? Does Wesleyan just dislike my school or...? Is there any other possible explanation

I am a white male student from a suburb of DFW, Texas. I go to a reputable public school and am in the top 25% and might be in the top 10% by the end of the year. I have taken 11 AP classes so far and plan on taking 5 or 6 more next year as a senior. All other classes I've taken have been honors classes with the exception of on level Spanish and a year of theatre. I got a 32 on my first ACT and a 31 the second time and they super score to a 33 (I don't know if Wes does this or not). I am an officer of National Science Honor Society at my school and have been involved with several clubs such as Chemistry club and Model UN. I also am a State Science Fair Participant. I have a 4.75 GPA out of 4 but my school does GPA weird and I'd say that most of my grades fall in the B+,A-,A range with few B-s. I also have done a varsity athletic sport my freshman, sophomore years and plan on returning next year. I have also been on the national team for this sport since 2011 (I'm including this because I feel like it will demonstrate commitment in my application). I took subject tests for world history and chemistry last year and scored 560 and 580 so I don't feel like I should send those. Would it be worth it for me to retake them? Wesleyan is my dream school, what are my chances of getting in?
