Wesleyan Applicants Class of 2023 Discussion

Would I fit in at Wesleyan
I completely fell in love with wes the first time I visited, but kids were just coming back from break so the school wasn’t in full session yet. The second time I visited, school was fully in session, and I loved a lot about it still, but the environment seemed a little cold and not super friendly (to be fair it was a rainy Monday morning). It made me worry that the school had a bit of a hard edge and I felt a little intimidated by that feeling.
I was just wondering if kids at Wesleyan are accepting, and friendly, and if it could be an easy adjustment for someone who is shy, but feels they would thrive around kind, passionate, open-minded and accepting people :) also if anyone was a student in the past and could speak on their transition to wes, with meeting friends + ways the transition was made easier by the school, etc. I would really appreciate it. I’m worried it may be a hard landing cus so many students seem so independent and confident going in!!
—also Wes is my top choice at the moment but my mom is worried me fitting in & finding other “nice, quiet girls,” and she’s really worried about drug use/party culture at the school, disorganization with class picking and overly extroverted or self-absorbed types of kids, so if anyone could speak on any of those things too that would be awesome! Thank you!

chance me for wesleyan - ED1 (please help!)
hi! i'm a senior in high school and was wondering if you could chance me for Wesleyan. Right now I'm torn between Wes and Skidmore for ED1 and i'm not sure which one I should go for! Skidmore is not as prestigious but i'm not sure if my stats are good enough to use my ED for wesleyan. i'm just trying to be realistic and i would really appreciate the help!
GPA: 90% unweighted (my school is weird they only do out of 100, n soph year I had some personal issues which led to my grades slipping), my school doesn't weigh so no idea what it is weighted
SAT: 1460 (770 english, 690 math)
Subject Tests: 720 US history, 740 literature
EC: christian youth group 4yrs, volunteering for that youth group as well as teaching religious education at a church in my community, president of my school's writer's society, co-president of school's theatre club, select chorus member, irish society member, participant in 2 musicals outside of school (at local all boys school), school campus ministry peer leader, national shakespeare competition regional semifinalist 2 years, jv volleyball freshman year
i'm hoping to get an internship this year with the NY Historical Society but not sure abt that until next week haha
white female from NY, first generation college student, need almost a full ride
strong essay and recs
visited wes campus and am doing an alumni interview next week

What are my chances at Wesleyan University
Senior
4.5 average weighted GPA
1510 SAT (If I take my best scores)
Got 6:5:6 on the SAT Essay (I know it's crap, but wondering if it matters)
Took three AP's
World- 3
Biology- 5
Psychology- 5
Currently taking 2 AP's: Environmental and AB Calculus, which I know I'll get 5's on
I am not in a sport, nor have I been in a lot of clubs (will taking more now senior year help?)
I'm undecided in a major, but know I want to go down the Math/Science route
Is there any chance? The more I look into this school the more I love it and I feel like I'm not good enough. Is there any way to get in like writing a killer college essay?

Chances for Wesleyan RD?
Wes is my top choice right now but I'm applying RD because money, curiosity about other acceptances, Oberlin giving out free t-shirts, etc. I'm an upper middle class white girl from PA but I go to a large inner city high school with an 80% poverty rate. Here's my stats (sorry in advance for length):
GPA: 5.017 W 4.0 UW
ACT: 35 (36 reading, 36 English, 33 math, 34 science)
Class Rank: 1/500
APs: English Lang 5, German 5, APUSH 5, APES 5, Comp Sci Principles 4, World History 4, AP Calc 2 (not reporting that one lol)
Currently taking: AP Lit, AP Bio, AP Macroecon, AP US gov, AP Stats, AP music theory (independent study), German translation (independent study I created w/ my teacher)
Taken three online dual enrollment classes with my local community college, 2 of them over the summer. DE Comp Sci C++, DE intro Art History, DE Cultural Geography
Intended major: Creative writing and German
Future Plans: Writer and German literary translator
My essay is about how going to German immersion camp the summer before 9th grade made me more willing to accept weakness, both within my characters and myself. It's not the best thing I've ever written but I'm working on it.
I had a really great alumni interview with Wes. We both geeked out about musical theater and I felt like I covered all of my interests and passions, so that should be a mark in my favor.
My teacher recs: From my German teacher, who will probably talk about how I put my phone in German, watched Netflix and Peppa Pig in German, read Harry Potter in German, and pushed her to have immersion days in class, and how I am taking an independent study in German translation with her right now. Every other student who took AP German with her got a one, but I got a five. She's known me all four years.
From my APES teacher: I promised her I would be her first five and I studied really hard and got it, so she'll probably mention that. Also, once I put a lot of extra research in for a project on population pyramids and sent her a long email about Samoa's interesting population problems (it's one of the most obese nations in the world! People are migrating out of there because there's no jobs available which is bringing the population down!) She also knows me in the context of NHS, which I am president of. She's known me two years.
From my calc teacher: She's also my Odyssey coach, my Relay for Life advisor, and basically the woman who runs the entire school. I've known her all four years, and she's seen me in the context of many leadership positions. She also "taught" me AP Comp Sci Principles (that class was a mess) and I was one of two people who actually completed the project and got a four despite learning nothing in the class. We're tight, I'm pretty sure she's going to write me a solid rec.
Honors:
AP Scholar w/ Distinction, national honor society, German honor society, math honor society, distinguished honor roll
Summers:
Creative writing program at local Penn State campus
Four week creative writing workshop at Summer@Brown
New York State Summer Young Writers Program at Skidmore College, which only accepts 40 students
I was an exhibit guide this past summer at a local science center
Activities:
Empower Allen founder/president 11th, 12th: Club devoted to empowering students at my school within their school, community, and world. Created successful alumni profiles for 20+ alumni and counting, organized voter reg drive, organized assembly w/ PA state congressional candidates. I originally founded the club because I joined the ACLU and POWER Northeast in tenth grade and wanted to make community social justice spaces more accessible to teenagers.
Chorale 10th, 11th, 12th: Select show choir/a capella group. Ca 50 community performances per year, yearly community service trip to US city. We were finalists for the Varsity Most Spirited High School Choir and we backed Barry Manilow last year (he looks like an elf king)
Odyssey of the Mind 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th Team captain: I planned meetings, wrote scripts, directed/performed in skits, created costumes/backdrops/props. We built a theremin and made ferrofluid from my eyeliner.
Theater 9,10,11,12: Was part of every show at my school. Officer for the drama club which organizes theater activities.
Varsity Tennis 9,10,11,12: Played top doubles position and went to districts in 11th grade.
Participated in a study with Lehigh University in 10th and 11th where I talked to high functioning autistic students during lunch every week to help them improve their conversational skills.
William Allen Construction Company 9,10,11,12: We plan and fund improvements to our school. I managed social media and PR. While I was part of the club we restored murals and built the baseball team's first dugouts.
Other activities: NHS president, class president, choir, orchestra, relay for life, environmental club (we collect recycling for the school because our school can't afford to hire someone to do it), SADD, PTSA student rep. I also am a Crucifer, Lector, and Sunday School attendant at my church.
Oh, and I'm a classically trained soprano who's taken voice lessons for six years, so I'm submitting a music supplement which my voice teacher thinks will be a boost to my app. I was also one of three cast members in a new chancel opera at my church this fall. I learned difficult music (tritones are the worst!) and went through about three months of rehearsals before appearing alongside two professional opera singers and getting paid $300.
Thanks for reading!

Wesleyan University ED1/ED2/RD Class of 2023 Discussion
I know someone else made a discussion but there hasn't been a lot of buzz going on around people applying to Wesleyan. I saw a similar post for the Class of 2021, and I too would love to discuss or vent with other applicants! Feel free to share (or not share, haha) what decision plan you applied with (ED 1, ED 2, or RD), prospective major, interests, where you're from, why you love Wesleyan, anything!
I applied ED 1, am a recruited athlete and I'm planning on majoring in Economics. I'm from the west coast, and a lot of people don't know what Wesleyan University is here, but the people that do know that it's a great school. I'll be very far from home, but I love the east coast and New York, and I'm also used to cold weather and personally prefer it more!
I took an official visit to Wes a few months ago and after visiting I canceled the rest of my athletic visits because I knew I found the perfect school for me. I verbally committed to play for Wes days a few days after my visit and now I'm anxiously waiting for my decision back in December! I'm so excited, Wesleyan is an amazing liberal arts college, the school is beautiful, and the people are so nice and smart; Wes seems like a great place for me to grow not only as a student but as a person too. :)

Supplemental for theatre changed?
So my kid is applying in the regular decision round. When he was gathering all the supplementals that he had to write earlier in the year, we checked the Wesleyan website and saw that they didn't have any supplementals necessary for the main application but they did allow a video of 2 contrasting monologues from applicants interested in theatre.
I just went back to their website to check format, where to upload, etc, and now the theatre supplementals tab tells me that Wesleyan wants an essay on theatre in our communities instead of a monologue video. Um? Did that change, or was I crazy or reading the wrong website?

Facilities Planning Update
Not sure when this presentation took place, but it’s fairly recent. The document below gives updated timelines for new construction projects for film/arts/PAC/science facilities.
Of particular interest to DS, the projected completion for construction of film phase 3 is the end of a Summer 2021 (assuming funding is met). The plans contain a film production studio.

Recommendation requirements
My son is interested in applying to Wes for class of 2023. I'm somewhat worried about the letter of recommendation requirements.
The application website states that "Two academic teacher evaluations are required. You are encouraged to submit one from a humanities or social sciences teacher and one from a math or science teacher."
My kiddo is lopsided in interests. He gets good grades in his math and science classes, but he struggles and he's not a happy student. His English, Psychology, arts, history, languages teachers all praise him to the skies, but he's not likely to get a good letter from his math teachers or science teachers. He is getting three teacher recs in total, one from an English teacher, one from the teacher who taught him Psychology and US History, and one from the theatre teacher.
Have any of you had admission success at Wes with a lopsided student who submits two teacher recs that are both in humanities/social sciences? Or, conversely, two math/science teacher recs?

If I get accepted, can I choose a major different from what I chose in the application?
Can I choose a major different from what I have chosen in the application as primary and second interests?
i.e. I chose studio arts but now I wanna have a film-making major or 3-2 engineering program

Anyone here select Wes over USC/NYU film?
If so, please share your thoughts on why you picked Wes over the usual film schools.
No doubt, Wes has a stellar reputation, esp for film, and the solid liberal arts foundation makes a better filmmaker.
I just wonder if those who choose Wes miss doing any production as first year film students. Are there Filmmaking clubs? (I didn’t see any online)
S19 honestly has his eyes set on the usual schools, but if he considered a LAC for film it would be Wes. When he started looking into the program, he was amazed by the strong alumni and faculty.

Wesleyan ED I applicant deferred to ED II
I applied to Wesleyan as ED I but was deferred to ED II. In my letter, they talked about it having to do with academic preparation, but I'm wondering if anyone else knew what it might mean. I know typically people get deferred to RD so is there anyone who's been in this situation who can clarify? I really really wanna go there and it is my absolute top choice so does anyone have any idea on what my chances might be in comparison to strong applicants in the RD pool?
